The maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is a small, dark-purple fruit that grows wild in the pristine landscapes of southern Chile and Patagonia. For centuries, the indigenous Mapuche people have used the berry as part of their diet and traditional medicine to give them strength. Today, maqui is recognised worldwide as one of the most powerful natural sources of antioxidants, giving it the nickname “The Superberry”, due to the high anthocyanin content comparing with other known berries like blackcurrant (Misle et al., 2011; Bribiesca-Cruz et al., 2021; Masoodi et al., 2019).
